Driving Sustainable Change: Lummus Technology’s Vision for the Future

For over a century, Lummus Technology (Lummus) has cultivated a culture of innovation, resulting in more than 140 technologies that keep modern life moving. This month, Lummus’ President and CEO, Leon de Bruyn, shares how this culture continues to thrive today.

Leon, the son of two teachers, once considered following in their footsteps. Although his career path changed, his parents instilled in him a deep respect for education and a drive to solve complex problems. Now, as President and CEO, those skills have shaped his leadership. “Our company and our people share a common drive. We listen, learn, and work in an environment where we can make a significant impact. We absorb, reinvent, and develop technology solutions that help improve the world,” Leon explains.

One of the most rewarding aspects of Leon’s role is collaborating with like-minded individuals. “The people I work with are dedicated to making a positive difference. They’re driven by action. Some are globally recognized for their patents, and their knowledge will influence society for decades to come.

“We are executing a vision developed three years ago when Lummus became independent. That vision has propelled us forward, especially regarding the energy transition. We are building on 110 years of expertise.”

Lummus has committed to transforming its industry to address the sustainability challenges society faces. Founded by Walter E. Lummus in 1907, today the company is a global leader in process technologies and energy solutions.

“Walter E. Lummus was an innovator and pioneer. He held several patents and wrote about converting molasses and biomass into fuels. We continue to use that innovative mindset to advance the energy transition and support decarbonization. We believe it’s our responsibility to apply our expertise to solving these challenges,” says Leon.

Reducing Waste

Developing and commercializing sustainable, circular solutions that reduce carbon emissions is now a top priority for Lummus. However, achieving this means tackling complex challenges, such as how to meet society’s needs sustainably while supporting global population growth. Lummus plays a key role in addressing these challenges.

For instance, the production of polymers requires hydrocarbon feedstock. Lummus has developed a technology that operates more cost-effectively, converting crude at high yields into petrochemicals for polymers. This reduces the production of other fuels and lowers both operational and capital costs.

“Crude-to-chemicals is an emerging approach, particularly in the Middle East and Asia. It’s a more efficient way to manufacture polymers with less waste, a lower carbon footprint, and reduced utility dependency,” Leon explains.

Smart Approaches

Despite the industry’s challenges, Leon remains optimistic. “There’s always a solution; we just need to find it. We’re focused on positive, practical outcomes. The science taught in schools forms the foundation for all engineering and technology advancements. And with so many bright minds in the industry, we’ll find the way forward.”

In addition to decarbonization, Lummus also tackles other emissions. Methane is a key focus, especially concerning exploration and waste disposal. Lummus has developed technology to convert methane into commodity-based chemicals, reducing fossil fuel dependency and preventing emissions.

Problem Solvers

Water management is another critical issue. Leon acknowledges the industry’s need to improve water usage and treatment. This led Lummus to acquire water treatment technologies from Siemens Energy, expanding its portfolio to support clients’ waste reduction and efficiency goals.

“We believe integrating these world-class water technologies with our process solutions will minimize or eliminate water impact. This is about creating sustainable, integrated solutions for the future,” says Leon.

Looking ahead, Leon envisions long-term progress. “Five years is too short. Our decisions must make sense ten or twenty years from now. If, in five years, Lummus isn’t recognized as a leader in solving energy challenges and manufacturing polymers sustainably, I’ll be disappointed. We aim to make a lasting positive impact through our expertise, technology development, and innovative solutions. And I believe we’ll reach that goal sooner than expected. We just need to stay focused and continue doing what we do best,” Leon concludes.
