Despite being founded just seven years ago, STORTEC has successfully delivered over 700 projects across all four corners of the world, including one of the largest food waste-to-energy facilities in Melbourne, Australia – a feat that’s demonstrative of its three centuries of combined experience and market-leading position in its respective fields. Now, with a brand-new facility in the works and further growth on the horizon, STORTEC is bigger and better than ever before, expanding its experience and expertise to new heights. New Energy Today sits down with Matt Dickinson, Managing Director, to learn more about how the company’s consistent pursuit of excellence translates into both day-to-day innovation and the relationships it holds with its clients, partners and own workforce. Matt begins, however, by providing some insight into STORTEC’s journey thus far.

“STORTEC was formed in 2018, when the current directors and I decided to come together and start a business that delivered something different to the marketplace,” he opens. “Our intention was to change the traditional market outlook in terms of how projects and contracts were delivered. We started with above ground storage for the drinking water, wastewater, and anaerobic digestion sectors, and from there, we’ve pushed ourselves to be a more rounded contractor, providing everything from civils and storage tanks to mechanical pipe work and access steel work. Within our first year, we’d achieved a turnover of £6 million with just 12 employees. Fast forward to 2025 and we’ve got a team of 55 now with an annual turnover of £15 million, now delivering between 80-to-100 projects a year on average.”

Nothing short of a service-driven success, STORTEC’s journey has been jam-packed with strategic growth and defining developments. The company’s most pivotal development, however, was its transition from a subcontractor to a principal contractor. This shift redefined the company’s narrative, significantly enhancing its scope of capabilities and opening the door to larger projects and partnerships. This change led STORTEC to one of its most notable partnerships with leading anaerobic digestion solutions provider, BioteCH4. With the two companies’ capabilities integrating harmoniously, STORTEC soon became part of the BioteCH4 group – and the rest is history.

“We already knew of the BioteCH4 team when we set up the business. We approached them and said that we wanted to grow as a company and that we knew they needed anaerobic digestion facilities built, and a natural synergy formed between us,” Matt reveals. “Being a part of the BioteCH4 group is great because our skillset lies in the contracting of the facilities they need, so as their operations continue, we’re able to support their ongoing service, as well as any maintenance or expansion works. Externally to the marketplace, this partnership also gives us a more rounded view of what our clients need. We can speak with experience through the knowledge of BioteCH4’s operations on how clients should design their facilities.

“Our aim is to be that one contractor with the total solution to take the headache away from our clients, and by partnering with companies who are specialists in their specific areas, such as BioteCH4, it brings the whole package together and strengthens our ability to deliver,” Matt continues. “It puts us more in control of the work we do, so we can provide extra flexibility in the program for our clients’ benefit. By frequently partnering with the same suppliers, we can also streamline our efficiency and hold stock when the market changes, which, again, improves project timescales for our clients.” he Wolsingham Sewage Treatment Works (STW), which is located in County Durham, England.

Given the nature of its work – particularly within the renewable energy sector – STORTEC is committed to driving sustainability and reducing its environmental impact, both in its project delivery and internal operations. “Across all of our site-based operations, we’ve moved to solar powered generators rather than diesel, which has helped us to save around £10,000 a month whilst cutting down our CO2 emissions significantly,” Matt shares. “We’ve benchmarked our net-zero target for 2045 and each year we’re making progress, from transitioning to motion sensor LED lighting to providing electrical vehicles for the company fleet, and we’re constantly looking for ways to recycle and repurpose our waste to avoid anything going to landfill.”

Of course, this high level of care and consideration extends beyond STORTEC’s environmental initiatives. Whether it’s supporting its own workforce or uplifting its local communities, STORTEC goes above and beyond in empowering its people-centric ethos.

“We always listen to our team and conduct individual and departmental surveys to find out what we could improve on, and we aim to implement as much of that as we can. Every bit of our operation revolves around our people, we foster an employee-first culture and look after our team, in-turn they look after the company; it builds a sense of togetherness,” Matt explains. “One thing that resonates with our team is our dedication to our CSR. People understand we’re trying to deliver our business sustainably, and we extend that beyond the day to day, giving back to our team. We’re very passionate about community engagement, sponsoring 11 grassroot football teams and actively supporting youth development. We support several charities, such as Lancashire Mind and Burnley FC in the Community; where we are key sponsors for a mental wellbeing program, providing mental health support and awareness to school children across the Lancashire region.

“There is a synergy with our charity work; mental health is incredibly important and for the construction industry the statistics for those effected by mental health are alarming, particularly in males aged between 20 and 40, so by supporting Lancashire Mind, our team are able to access those services if they need them.”

As more businesses strive to find more sustainable waste management methods, STORTEC will remain on hand with the right solutions. Equipped with unwavering passion and industry-leading expertise, the company is well-positioned to continue to grow and prosper, leveraging the power of specialist contracting in supporting the global energy transition.

“In five years, we will maintain the same values of innovation, sustainability and culture; we’re not going to lose sight of them as we grow because they form our foundations and we know that keeping them at the forefront is the key to success. Our aim is to grow in our current markets, but to also look at expansion into new markets, perhaps internationally,” Matt concludes. “We anticipate a significant increase in our turnover, which will, in turn, increase our headcount and consolidate our position as a well-rounded contractor with the ability to deliver larger projects, greater infrastructure along with anaerobic digestion facilities to more clients.”
